Abstract:

The stability and magnitude of the surface charge density of dielectric materials having electrets properties were evaluated. Organics, including polymers, waxes, lipids, and inorganics, including a variety of ceramic compositions and glasses, were formed and measured under different environmental conditions. Experiments were designed to determine whether the magnitude and stability of the observed surface charge densities reported in the literature were limited by the forming and storage environment or whether these values reflected a basic intrinsic material limitiation. The effect of the forming and storage parameters on the stability and magnitude of the surface charge is discussed in relation to the phenomenological theory of electret behavior which is expanded.
