Abstract:

The large deflections of fabric structures under uniformly distributed lateral loads are studies in this work. The analytical model is composed of two sets of plane parallel filaments superposed, one on the other, at right angles. Free rotations with no translations are the restriction placed on the intersections of the two sets. Considering tensile energy alone, the governing differential equation is derived by use of the differential geometry, the principle of minimum potential energy, and the variational calculus. The derived equation is a quasi-linear elliptic partial differential equation and is solved numerically by the use of finite difference approximations. An experimental investigation is presented and the results of this investigation are compared graphically with numerical results obtained on an IBM 7090 digital computer. Author
