Abstract:

The influence of temperature on the room temperature strength of E-glass rods was studied. Groups of rods were heated in air at various temperatures in the range from 160 to 1100 F. The strength versus temperature relation was found to be qualitatively similar to that determined for E-glass fibres. Light and Electron Micrographs were made of the rod surface after various treatments. It is suggested that the most likely reason for the strength decrease, observed after heating, is an ordering or devitrification at the rod surface. Author
