Abstract:

This investigation was conducted to determine the resistance welding characteristics of F48 alloy welded to itself. It was concluded from this study that 1 spot welding of columbium alloy F48 to the requirements of MIL-W-6858A cannot presently be accomplished primarily because of the difference in internal structural requirements 2 recrystallized and fused interface in F48 will tear out material from the mating part rather than shear along the visible line at the interface 3 surface impurities and contamination should be removed from F48 columbium by using the chemical cleaning method outlined in MAC P.S. 22141 and 4 spot welding of F48 columbium alloy can be successfully accomplished with carefully controlled deed welding sequence, technique and uniform quq quality materials. The basic requirements for spot welds in F48 appear to be preheat short weld time and low pressures. Author
