This test was conducted to determine the effect of copper plating and stripping on the static fatigue strength of AISI 4340 steel heat treated to 260,000 to 280,000 psi. Testing consisted of determining the time to failure for notched tensile specimens under sustained load after copper plating and stripping by various methods. Results showed that the material becomes embrittled by the copper plating operation and embrittlement relief is obtained only after stripping and baking at 375F. Author
