Previous studies to develop an HY-130150 submarine-hull steel indicated that a quenched and tempered Ni-Cr-Mo or Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel containing about 5 Ni appeared very promising for this application. However, the hardenability of the steels studied was too low for 4-in. thick plates, and the temperability of the steels without vanadium was unsatisfactory. Therefore, the effects of variations in manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium on the hardenability, mechanical properties, and temperability of ten vacuum-melted, vacuum-carbon-deoxidized 5Ni-Cr-Mo steels were determined on 12-in. thick plates that were water-quenched from 1500 F and tempered to simulate light-gage plates and that were blower-cooled from 1500 F and tempered to simulate the heat treatment at the midthickness of a water-quenched 4-in. thick plate.
