Abstract:

Maraging steels have been reported to exhibit excellent notch toughness at yield strengths of 180 to 210 ksi. In addition, they may possess advantages in forming and welding not available in quenched and tempered steels in this strength range. For these reasons maraging steels are of interest as plate materials for the fabrication of submarine hulls with a minimum yield strength of 180 to 210 ksi. To help establish an optimum composition for 18Ni-8Co-Mo maraging steels, aging studies were conducted on vacuum-inductionmelted steels having various titanium, aluminum, and molybdenum contents.
