Abstract:
The pad shear test was conducted at Bacchus Works, Hercules Powder Compay, between 20 May 1963 and 21 June 1963. The test was conducted to determine the structural integrity of the mounting pad and adhesive system for the retrorocket system when subjected to a shear load, simulating flight and firing loads. Although the flight environmental temperature of the adhesive system will be between 100 degrees and 120 degrees F, there is very little difference in the adhesive strength at these temperatures and 80 degrees F therefore, the test was conducted at approximately 80 degrees F. The test method used induced a small bending moment into the pad and adhesive system. A total of three cases, P515Y.03, P615Y.03, and P615.04, and 10 pads were used in this test. Case P615Y.04 had four pads bonded to it, and P515Y.03 and P615Y.04 each had three pads bonded to them. This represents five pads bonded with Armstrong A12T adhesive, four bonded with Shell Epon 937, and one pad bonded with Dow Corning Q-2-0103-2. Test results show that the glass pads failed in bearing and, in some cases, sheared between the various layers of glass cloth. The average ultimate load for the 10 pads was 25,592 lb. Author
