Abstract:

A literature survey was conducted to determine what kinds of coatings were presently being used and the feasibility of developing new, ice-phobic coatings for use on outside electrical equipment. The known principles and materials which have applications in preventing the formation of ice and snow on outside surfaces are reviewed. Field experience has shown that there are no coatings presently available which are effective over extended periods of time. On the basis of the ice ashesion strength of the various coatings, it appears that it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to obtain a material with the necessary physical properties to eliminate the accumulation of ice.
