Abstract:
The research program includes a literature search and a coordinated test and analysis program in three phases. Phase I consists of tests and analyses of simple specimens under controlled conditions of biaxial stress and temperature. The test data are correlated with two theoretical crack propagation equations. Phase II consists of tests and analyses of flat stiffened panels containing various crack arresting straps. This phase provides information necessary for evaluating selected crack arresting configurations under fatigue loading considering crack-stopper area, material, attachment to the skin, skin material and the effect of a skin splice.
