Abstract:
The specific heat at constant volume of gaseous nitrogen is calculated by semi-quantum-statistical methods for temperatures up to 20,000 K. The summations required for the partition functions and specific heat calculations were performed on an IBM 704 calculator by using spectroscopic data to make a fairly exact series, instead of using either a short series approximation or an approximate integral. The effect of molecular clustering is neglected in this study. Emphasis is placed on the effects of dissociation, ionization, and velocity adjustment on the specific heat. Consequently, the range between 3,000 K and 20,000 K is examined in detail. Author
