Abstract:

A Ground Effect Machine operating over water is influenced by the manner in which the water surface is distorted under the GEM. A multiple wave gauge designed to record the time history of the water surface at various positions as the GEM passed overhead. Experiments were made using two different angles of jet inclination -20 and -60 degrees, at various air flow rates, clearance heights and forward speeds. The shape of the cavity formed between the GEM and the water was found to be dependent on the forward velocity. The general shape was similar for the different jet inclination angles and the various flow rates and clearance heights used. The relative size of the cavity increased with increasing flow rate and decreasing height. Profile and surface contours were drawn for the various runs. Author
