Abstract:

Based on experiments with Aedes aegypti, a theory of the repellent action of chemicals like dimethyl phthalate was advanced. The responses of Anopheles quadrimaculatus are sufficiently different from those of Aedes aegypti to suggest that this theory is probably an over-simplification. Nevertheless, the presumption remains that the insect does not react to the presence of dimethyl phthalate specifically, but rather that the chemical repellents act on a sensory system that normally serves for the perception of some other environmental factors. An attempt is being made to identify these factors. Author
