Abstract:

Temperatures were determined at which the beneficial effects of shot peening on the fatigue properties of chromium-plated Dynaflex high strength steel would be nullified. It was found that the beneficial effects were retained with exposure to heat up to 1000 F, with little or no decrease in fatigue properties. It was also established that the fatigue limit of the unpeened plated steel increased with exposure to higher temperature, until at 1000 F the fatigue limit value for the plated steel nearly approached those of the bare, the peened, and the plated-and-peened steel.
