Abstract:
The feasibility of calculating two threat estimators for warning aerospace vehicles of attack was investigated by analog simulation. The first of these estimators is the ratio of range between target and attacking vehicle to its time derivative range rate. The second estimator is related to the first, and represents a more complicated function of range. Simulation results are presented for Mach 1,2, and 3 aircraft attacked by surface-to-air missiles. The results confirm that the threat estimators can be easily calculated in the presence of noise distortion of the input range information. The first estimator is more useful with linear but noisy range data the second one is more useful with range data which are nonlinearly distorted. Author
