Abstract:
The design, analysis, and operation of a rocket sled to conduct transonic aerodynamic track tests of a full-scale missile are reported. The sled was designed to use a low-frequency rubber suspension system to isolate track-induced vibrations. This necessitated dynamic stability and six-degree-of-freedom vibration analyses. A three-axle sled allowed the suspension system to remain decoupled despite changes of mass. Onboard instrumentation to record test measurements included high-speed cameras and semiconductor type strain gages. In these tests, controlfin hinge moments and the lift, drag, and centerof-pressure of themissile as functions of speed and angle-of-attack were successfully measured. Author
