Abstract:
A thorough survey of previous aviation crash safety research programs and the experimental facilities used for these programs was conducted. The fields of crash impact protection, crash fire safety, and ditching were covered by the survey. An analysis of future research needs in this area was made and a program of experimental studies recommended. These experimental studies include full-scale crash impact tests with fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft and biaxial acceleration tests of aircraft seats however, no full-scale ditching tests are recommended at this time. It is felt that the primary emphasis in the research studies should be placed on improving the crashworthiness of business aircraft and supersonic transports. Since no existing facility was found capable of conducting this experimental program, construction of a new facility is recommended. Engineering design concepts for a facility to conduct the recommended studies at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center were developed. Author
