Abstract:

Successful radiator tube-fin samples were made of stainless steel tubes with stainless steel fins, niobium tubes with niobium fins, niobium tubes with copper fins and stainless steel tubes with copper fins. Of questionable success, a combination of steel tubes and beryllium fins was achieved. Attempts to fabricate a beryllium tube-beryllium fin combination were unsuccessful, although a brazed beryllium tube assembly was successfully made. Environmental tests at temperatures up to 1600 F at vacuum of 10 to the 7th power mm. Hg. were performed on several coating systems. Data obtained led to a calculated emissivity reading at typical operating temperatures and pressures of space radiators on the coating system and weight loss versus time was noted for most coatings investigated.
