Abstract:

Research is presented to further develop a strain measuring technique which could differentiate between strains due to mechanically applied loads and those due to the thermal environment and, hence, be capable of measuring the load imposed on aerospace structures. A series of developmental tests was conducted by subjecting a single cell box beam to combined thermal anc mechanical loads with the program culminated by a successful laboratory demonstration of the technique on a forged airplane main frame. Extensive use was made of digital computer programs to reduce the test data and test results are presented essentially as a comparison between the loads applied to the structural components and those computed from recorded strains and temperatures. The technique as presently developed is considered suitable for immediate flight applications at moderate temperatures. Author
