Abstract:
Many practical problems involve the production of species that are present in very small concentrations by means of irreversible homogeneous chemical rate processes in flows of the boundary layer type. We present an analysis of the special concentration distributions of these trace species, pointing out various general characteristics of the distributions and giving a general iterative formula for calculating the distributions in any locally similar flow of the boundary layer type. An integral formula is given for the total flow rate of the trace species at any downstream position x, which exhibits terms that account for the production by irreversible reactions and for the loss by diffusion. This total flow rate is computed for two representative flows, a an isovelocity mixing region and b a flat-plate boundary layer both subsonic and hypersonic with blowing or ablation. The results show that the total flow rate always increases as x to the 32 power and exhibits predictable dependences on other flow and reaction rate parameters. Author
