Abstract:

This investigation was designed to show the effect of the following variables on the mechanical properties of heat treated low alloy steel repair welded without subsequent re-heat treatment 1 Base metal composition and thickness 2 percent penetration of repair 3 repair welding filler composition 4 weld composition being repaired and 5 heat treat level of the base metal. The heat treat level or percent penetration ranges considered had little effect. With the use of a sufficiently strong repair weld filler, the failures occurred in the heat affected zone of the base metal. Variation of gage had a sizeable effect. The 4340 steel with deep hardening characteristics showed higher as repaired properties than 4130 steel. All the chosen fillers air hardened more readily than the base metal, hence their effect was small. Author
