Abstract:

Waterborne sound resulting from the vibration of resiliently mounted submarine machinery is shown to be proportional to the output-to-input force ratios of the installed foundation structure and to be independent of any other foundation characteristics. This result emphasizes the importance of force ratios in foundation design. The use of mobility measurements for the evaluation of foundation force ratios is described. Calculated force-ratio curves are given for a vertically and laterally driven portal frame and for center-driven beams. The curves show that foundation act like force amplifiers near the resonant frequencies and do not provide much attenuation at any frequency. Results on simple foundations show that forceratio peaks are suppressed when the foundation is rugged enough to approximately match the impedance of the hull. Flimsy foundations have high force-ratio peaks and should be avoided. Author
