This paper describes the political and economic motivating forces in Viet-Nam, the strategic hamlet program, the government orginization, and briefly describes the U.S. advisory efforts. It discusses counter-insurgency, particularly the effects on weapons selectivity, the defense, transportation, communication, and offense. Examples from recent experiences in Viet-Nam are given. Patrolling and Viet-Cong responses to U.S. equipment and tatics are described, as is the role of American technology in counter-insurgency.
