Abstract:

A plan is presented for investigation man-computer information exchange problems within the context of the scheduling function in terminal air traffic control The planned research is divided into two stages. The first consists of parallel investigations of human scheduling behavior and the development of computer programs to automate the process. The second stage aims at designing a scheduling system which incorporates dynamic interaction in real time between the computer programs and human operators. The programs required to automate the scheduling function are described and experimental studies of human conflict detection and conflict resolution behavior are suggested. A more general statement of human scheduling behavior is presented together with an approach which utilizes an abstracted environment and task rather than the air traffic control context. Author
