Abstract:

The penetration of a radio frequency magnetic field into a cylindrically symmetric conducting medium can be used to calculate the conductivity. At a particular point, the ratio of the rf magnetic field gradient to the rf magnetic field is a measure of the conductivity at that point. These conductivity calculations are found to be relatively insensitive to errors caused by conductivity gradients. Consequently, this technique can be used to measure conductivity space variations. Experiments with uniform salt solutions and solutions containing conductivity gradients are used to check accuracy. The results of the application of this technique to conductivity measurement of a plasma produced by a one megawatt electric arcjet are presented. Author
