The greater part of this paper discusses technical problems and the questions of whether active missile defense can be technically, economically, or operationally feasible. These questions are likely to have different answers depending on what segment of the United States is to be defended cities airfields hard missile sites hardened command posts etc., the purpose for which defense is undertaken to prevent or limit damage to buy time to raise enemy force requirements etc., and how well the defense system is supposed to perform under the variety of circumstances which could arise.
