Abstract:

This report has been prepared at the request of the Flight Mechanics Panel of the Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development. It reviews generally the experimental work, both model and full-scale, whch has been carried out or is currently in progress in the various NATO countries, to determine the ground effects associated with VTOL aircraft operating close to the ground effects associated with VTOL aircraft operating close to the ground. It also contains a number of comments on some of the areas where further research and development would be valuable these recommendations are by no means exhaustive and largely reflect the authors opinion following his discussions at a number of laboratories in the U.K., U.S.A. and France. The scope of the survey has been defined by the Chairman of the Flight Mechanics Panel to include prob3ems of ground erosion, re-circulation and the aerodynamic pressure distribution on the aircraft in the presence of the ground. The types of VTOL aircraft considered are those using freepropeller or ducted-fan systems or hot-jet lifting engines. Other types such as jet-flap or deflected-slipstream aircraft and helicopters are not included in this review. Author
