Abstract:

The mathematical procedure and reasoning used to perform a thermal analysis for the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories scanning spectrometer which will be mounted externally to the Orbiting Solar Observatory S-57 is described. The analysis was performed by dividing the spectrometer into a number of discrete zones and obtaining an instantaneous heat balance equation for each zone. The resulting equations were then lumped together to constitute a single differential equation defining the mean temperature of the complete spectrometer during the day phase of the orbit and similar equation for the night phase. Simplified equations were developed to determine the stabilization temperature of each isolated zone and for the complete spectrometer. A comparison was made between these results and the results obtained using an IBM-7090 computer. The latter results depict the orbital temperature, temperature fluctuation and number of orbits required for the stabilization temperature to occur. Author
