The millimeter wave generation program experimental set up as it has evolved to date is described. The experimental tube will be made in two sections. One section will contain the electron emitter, the accelerating structure and the traveling wave tube helix. The second section will contain any of three different electrode arrangements for generating a highly ionized plasma in the interaction zone and a TM01 horn for coupling the transverse electromagnetic wave out of the plasma into space. The entire experimental tube will be located within a solenoid capable of producing a pulsed flux density of 30 Kg. An available 125 kilojoule capacitor bank and switch tubes will be used as the driving source for the solenoid. External load coils and resistors will be used to obtain critically damped rise times from 500 microsec. to 3 ms. Detail design and construction of these coils and associated support structure will be done on General Electric funds. Mercury will initially be used as the plasma producing media. Cesium will be used in a second set of tests if time permits. Author
