Abstract:

Five rockets equipped with sampling devices and gamma dosimeters were fired through the Small Boy cloud at H1 minute at a series of altitudes from 1,000 feet to 5,000 feet in an effort to test the feasibility of this technique for studying the early nuclear cloud. The only rocket recovered early collected no sample. Another rocket, recovered approximately 4 months after the shot, failed to deploy its parachute and was severely damaged. Presumably the parachutes failed also in the three remaining rockets. The trajectory predictions were seriously in error. The feasibility of sampling the early nuclear cloud by rocket remains in doubt. Author
