Abstract:

A description is given of the method used for examining the continuous deformation of a solitary wave together with an example in the application of the technique to the simplest case of deformation - reflection of a solitary wave from a vertical wall. The method of solution is an adaptation of McCowans treatment of the steady-state solitary wave wherein the parameters in a trial harmonic function are chosen to minimize the pressure along a specified streamline in the flow field, viz. the free surface. Extension of the equations characterizing the steady-state wave in water of uniform depth, to the case of continuous deformation, is assisted by the additional construction of a fixed region which contains both the wave itself as a subregion and the sources which produce the flow field. The field of the deforming wave is then obtained from a suitable modification of the fixed region containing the steady-state wave. Author
