Abstract:

Preliminary results of an investigation into the properties of titanium carbon alloys are described. Compositions ranging from 18 to 30 wo carbon were synthesized and fabricated by arcmelting and gravity casting techniques. Microstructures, hardness, modulus of rupture and compressive strength values are presented. Existence of a hyperstoichiometric eutectic is confirmed, and established in the vicinity of 26 wo carbon. Improvement in thermal shock and room temperature brittleness behavior is obtained from the existence of free graphite platelets throughout the hypereutectic specimens. Results of sonic air plasma arc tunnel tests at heat fluxes of 100, 300, and 1600 BTUft2-sec are discussed. Author
