Exposure to light of a photopolymerizable 3ayer containing the ferric salt of 1,3-dihydroxy-1,3dimethyl glutaric acid is accompanied by formation of a violet print-out image. Colored images which disappear within a period of minutes are formed during the exposure to light of photopolymerizable compositions containing benzilic acid and the ferric salt of a mineral acid. Reinvestigation of the dye-sensitized system indicates that shorter exposures are possible when N-phenylglycine is used as electron donor with methylene blue or eosin, and when polyvinylpyrrolidone is used as binder. 2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane and 1234-tetrahydrocarbazole were examined as autoxidation substrates. Coatings containing 2phenyl-1,3-dixolane in combination with monomer and a photoreducible dye yield photoresists on exposure. A program was initiated to design and synthesize a photopolymerization system based on a polymeric photoinitiator in conjunction with a macromolecular polyfunctional monomer. Author
