Abstract:

The present program is directed toward research into non-thermal and metastable ionization with either metal vapors, seeded gases, or rare gases. The program has been devided into the five following subtasks 1 The two-inch heated shock tube, which is designed to demonstrate and to investigate the phenomena of non-thermal and metastable ionization in a magnetic field using seeded and pure rare gases. 2 The Barium diode experiment which by the method of line absorption has been adapted to study non-thermal electrical discharges. 3 The closed loop MHD experiment at the GE Research Laboratory, which utilizes seeded rare gases and is designed to investigate an MHD system in which there are no moving parts. 4 Cycle analyses of systems using MHD generators. 5 Theoretical studies of metastable ionization and magnetohydrodynamic flows under the influence of non-thermal ionization.
