Abstract:

When a submerged object translates horizontally through a field whose density gradient varies in the vertical, both internal waves and the conventional surface waves are generated. It is of particular interest to determine the surface displacement of such waves. In order that irrelevent parameters do not appear those involved in minor details as opposed to macroscopic features, the object is represented by a dipole which would correspond precisely to a sphere of radius a in an indefinitely extended fluid of constant speed and a density distribution is adopted which appears to be the most useful tractable approximation to a typical oceanic distribution.
