Abstract:

A brief introduction is given to the scattering matrix. The scattering of electrons is discussed by diatomic molecules, specifically oxygen. The treatment is restricted in such a way that electronic computing machinery is not requisite to the final solution. In the electron case the Born approximation is, of course, applicable. The proton-molecule scattering problem is discussed, specifically proton scattering by oxygen. A distorted wave treatment is carried to the point where a very small set of one dimensional differential equations are obtained. Then the impact parameter treatment of this same proton-oxygen problem is considered. For the familiar two-state case the total cross-sections are obtained. The last section is concerned with additions to Professor Takayanagis bibliography.
