This report on the study and elimination of multipactor discharges at wave-guide windows of high power microwave tubes covers a period during which design and construction of a new high power test facility was undertaken. The test facility incorporates a specially constructed klystron to operate on a power range between .1 and 1 megawatt, and to allow the use of a 2 duty cycle at 200 kilowatt peak output level. Construction of a new window box to allow the use of vacuum on both sides of the window has been completed. Tests have been made on multipactoring windows with different values of crossed magnetic field, and light glow patterns have been recorded. These indicate the possibility of eliminating multipactor by the use of static magnetic fields at the window. In this quarter the results of multiapactor suppression by grooving uncoated silica windows hav been further cooonfirmed on a total of 3 windows. One test window was grooved vertically, another was grooved with a .015 in. groove and the third window was grooved and firepolished. The window with vertical grooves failed at 65 mw peak and 12 kw average power. The other two windows withstood all tests and no multipactor developed. Author
