This study was designed to provide information bearing on 1 the relation between personality variables and individual differences in the experiencing and handling of stress 2 the relation between interpersonal variables and stress and 3 the acquaintance process following Newcomb as it operated in this specialized group. During the first year of the study two kinds of raw data have been collected 1 a three-day personality assessment was conducted at the Institute of Personality Assessment and Research, University of California, Berkeley and 2 the author accompanied the Expedition to the mountain to gather field data relating to the topics listed above. Author
