Abstract:

Input encoding for synchronous sequential machines is introduced. The input encoder changes the binary representations of the inputs to simplify the machines gating circuitry. Algorithms are developed for input assignment based on the principles of input equivalence and input adjacencies. An input pair is determined for a state of the machine when two inputs cause a transition into the same nexc-state. These input pairs are weighted according to the numbers of times they occur, and these data determine the input assignments. Examples are considerred and the reductions measured using a diode count.
