Abstract:

A major goal of research on this project is the synthesis of polymers based on a silicon-nitrogen framework. Desirable properties of such material are 1 optimal stability toward hydrolysis and high temperatures and 2 highly linear structure because of the advantageous properties for technical application. Stability as mentioned at a is increased with a high degree of d sub pi-p sub pi character of the Si-N bond. As to linear silazanes, not much success has yet been achieved. The only polymers with established structure that can be considered to be linear are those based on ethylenediamine. By the trick of fixing neighboring nitrogen atoms by means of an ethylene-bridge the formation of small silazane rings was ruled out. This last-mentioned tendency is the major obstacle in the path to linear polymers. Linear silazanes of the type, -SiMe2-NSiMe3-n, seem to be very promising because of their fairly good hydrolytic stability. Author
