Abstract:

Geological data of many kinds can be considered as a table in which observations on several variables are recorded for many cases data points, specimens, geographic localities, samples, situations, etc.. If the table is large and the underlying causal structure obscure, factor and vector analyses can be a significant aidin revaling simple patterns in complex data. Mathematically, these approaches treat each variable or each case as a vector and resolve it into a small number of component vectors. Vectors may represent variables Rmode analysis or cases Q-mode analysis. Factor analysis aims at resolution in terms of theoretical vectors. Vector analysis resolves observations in terms of selected data vectors. Hypothetical numerical examples of factor and vector analyses are given and a geological example considered.
