Research and development of an ultrasonic light scanning and active optical imaging system has been conducted during the first quarterly reporting period ending 19 September 1963. The present report has been divided into two main headings Ultrasonic Light Scanning, and Active Optical Imaging System. With regard to the former, considerable experimental work has been carried out employing a crystal quartz deflection cell and, with an optical path length of 6.76 centimeters in the sound field, deflections as high as .77 degrees peak to peak have been achieved with the cell driven up to one-half the calculated safe input power at a frequency of 450 KC. Additionally, attempts have been made to drive a lucite cell with a barium titanate transducer. Finally, a high pressure liquid cell providing a long 4 inch optical path length in the deflecting medium liquid has been designed and is currently heing fabricated. Work on the active optical imaging system has been directed toward determining the fundamental requiremnets of the demonstration model and defining the necessary components to satisfy them. Author
