The nature of the condensation nuclei in the atmosphere was investigated with particular reference to their possible formation as the result of gaseous reactions. An extensive series of observations of the nuclei in urban air was made at a station in University College, Galway, and on maritime-rural air at a coastal field station on Mace Head, County Galway. A port able nucleus counter was constructed and calibrated for field work searching for sources of nuclei, particularly in the littoral zone. It was shown that sea spray and surf, sea weed and a drying foreshore, with or without sunshine, were not major sources of nuclei. Author
