Abstract:

Because of the proposal to construct a large hydroballistics tank at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, research was initiated to investigate many problems bearing on the design and operation of such a facility. The subsequent uncertainty as to the provision of the facility led to a termination of the research. In some areas the investigation was fairly complete when the work was terminated in others, only fragmentary data were available. The results that have been obtained support the judgment that the large size of the facility will not prevent satisfactory acquisition of data by photographic recording. The water supplied to the area was made almost equivalent to distilled water by filtration, and a diatomaceous-earth filter was found to maintain a satisfactorily low turbidity. Although chlorination generally increased the turbidity, this turbidity was removable by filtration without affecting the chlorination itself. Author
