Abstract:

The physical methods now used with Air Force ballistic missile systems to detect hazardous vapors, the limitations of these methods as spill and leak detectors, and future developments in the field of automatic detection of spills and leaks are described. Emphasis is placed on the safety objectives of spill and leak detection systems. Recommendations are given concerning vapor detection system selection criteria, technical data and training, remedial measures for current systems, and future developments.
