Abstract:

An IBM 709 program is presented here that will fit least-squares polynomial surfaces up to degree three to observations distributed in three dimensions. These surfaces aid in presenting and analyzing three-dimensional variability in a set of observations by separating systematic large-scale variation from small-scale variability which includes sampling and measurement errors. The large-scale systematic variation can be used to develop or test geological models and to make quantitative estimates of the properties of geological bodies. This report on the program includes 1 discussion of geological uses of the program, 2 an outline of the mathematics involved, 3 a FORTRAN listing of the program together with flow diagrams, and 4 a geological example which illustrates the program input, operation, and output, as well as some aspects involved in interpretation of the example.
