A commerically available axial flow mass flowmeter is evaluated under steady state conditions. The effect of variations in temperature, fluid viscosity, and fluid velocity profile on flowmeter accuracy are determined. Consideration is given to the possible causes of the turbine torque drop off exhibited at high mass flow rates by high viscosity fluids. Points to consider in the cut and try process of meter redesign are discussed. A theoretical analysis of the mass flowmeter transient response are discussed. An axial flow mass flowmeter that might be less sensitive to fluid viscosity variations and more applicable for use with steady state and transient recording systems is proposed. Author
