A STUDY OF THE BASIC MECHANISM OF DUST EROSION

This report presents the results of a study of the erosion of materials by air-borne dust. Erosion rates for several metals were obtained over a wide range of dust particle velocity, particle angle of impact, dust particle size, and dust concentration. The experimental results show that for the range of variables studied, erosion occurs due to the plastic displacement of material by the dust particle. Relationships defining the effect of particle velocity and angle of impact upon erosion rates are given. Experimental data showing the effects of dust concentration, dust size distribution, and material properties on the rates of erosion are presented, and the mechanisms discussed.
