Abstract:

An automatic melting point apparatus was designed and a laboratory model fabricated whereby melting points may be determined on transparent or semitransparent crystal-line solids. The apparatus uses polarized light to detect changes in birefringence as the solid anisotropic form changes to the isotropic melt. A photoconductor and a thermocouple act as transducers to generate voltages corresponding to light intensity and temperature, respectively, as a sample is heated. These voltages are fed to an X-Y recorder which provides a permanent record of the melting phenomenon. A qualitative discussion of the properties of crystalline solids and the interaction of these solids with polarized light is included.
