A major effort was directed toward finding a dielectric with suitably low loss characteristics for construction of four-millimeter resonant structures. Additionally, the dielectric constant should be approximately that of the ferrite to provide minimum discontinuity. Resonators of MgTiO3 ceramic constructed for four and eight millimeters have been tested with Qs ranging approximately from 600 to 1700, the indicated loss tangent being about 0.001 at four millimeters. Because MgTiO3 is a ceramic, diamond tools are required for cutting and shaping. Small spherical cavities, a few mils across can be cut by sandblasitng, then shaped accurately by a soft metal tool cut to size using abrasive powder. To establish ferrite rod properties, the cutoff characteristics of the zero order modes are investigated in detail. It has been established that one mode is H-like and one is E-like. The former is most suitable for parallel pumping. Author
